Migrant Clinicians Network Announces New Project with Washington Department of Health

FERNDALE, WA -- Migrant Clinicians Network (MCN) is launching a new collaboration with the Washington Department of Health through a $50,000 grant funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The grant’s aim is to improve diabetes care in underserved and immigrant communities. As part of the grant, MCN will host a conference focused on access to diabetes care for Washington state community health workers and the health providers with whom they work. The inaugural conference will be held in June, and will become an annual event.

“This new partnership with the Washington Department of Health is integral to building strong community-based networks in public health for immigrant and underserved mobile poor,” said Jennie McLaurin, MD, MCN’s Specialist in Bioethics, Child and Migration Health. Upon completion of the conference portion of the grant, MCN will begin the second phase of the grant, focused on expanding training for community health workers and increasing community collaboration.

This grant is the first formal partnership between MCN and the Washington Department of Health. MCN has worked in cooperation with the Department of Health on a number of fronts, including at professional conferences and in the recent investigation of anencephaly in eastern Washington state. The one-year, renewable grant is part of a multi-year national initiative funded by the CDC.
