Structuring HIV Care for Mobile HIV Patients

Meeting the needs of those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS can be difficult for a standing population. Overlay those difficulties with the obstacles created by migration or authorization status and the possibility for confusion increased tremendously. This session will discuss some of the impediments to HIV care experienced by migrants living with HIV/AIDS. It will seek to provide options to address the barriers and support thise attempting to provide quality health care to migrants and other mobile poor populations. Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will explore the public health history of HIV/AIDS which began with a primary focus on spread of disease to an emphasis on testing, treatment and continuity of care. 
  • Participants will survey the obstacles created by migration or the legal status of patients and potential solutions to these challenges.
  • Participants will investigate the impact of the Affordable Care Act on existing HIV/AIDS services and discuss likely future scenarios for public health and health center systems serving migrant and immigrant HIV patients.
