FUNDING FOR NEW PROVIDER PRACTICUM DISCONTINUED
The Migrant Clinicians Network regrets to announce that applications for 2007 placements for the New Provider Practicum in Migrant Health will not be accepted due to discontinuation of program funding. Since 1990, the Practicum has helped to introduce newly trained clinicians to the challenges and rewards of working with migrant farmworkers.
The clinicians selected for the 2006 Practicum are currently working in migrant health centers across the U.S. and will continue their placements without interruption.
MCN thanks the clinicians, preceptors, health centers and advisory committee members for their contributions to the success of this unique program.
What is the New Provider Practicum in Migrant Health?
The New Provider Practicum in Migrant Health is a program that provides for a four-month working and learning experience in a migrant health center for new health care professionals. New Providers are nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurse-midwives, and dental hygienists, who have completed the training program for their profession and have an interest in working with migrant farmworkers. The purpose of the program is to increase the sensitivity and understanding of migrant health care issues for the New Providers as they consider careers working with underserved populations.
Practicum opportunities are created through collaborative arrangements between the Migrant Clinicians Network and federally funded migrant health centers. Clinical experience with the migrant farmworker population is gained through placement in a migrant health center whose staff is responsible for the orientation and clinical supervision of the New Provider.
This program has been in existence since 1990, and is funded by the Bureau of Primary Health Care. It was under the direction of the National Rural Health Association until July 2002, when responsibility for the program was transferred to the Migrant Clinicians Network. What does the New Provider Practicum involve?
The New Provider Practicum is a four-month placement at a migrant health center, under the supervision of a clinical mentor at the health center. The placement is timed to coincide with the time of year when the health center sees a majority of its migrant patients, usually summer and fall.
The New Provider provides clinical services at the migrant health center 4 days per week during the Practicum, and is required to complete a project during the remaining time. The project topic is selected with input from the health center, in hopes that it will meet a need not currently addressed.
