Bio

Deliana Garcia, MA was born and raised in El Paso, TX. Recruited to the University of Texas at Austin in order to raise the minority student population, Ms. Garcia enrolled as an undergraduate in 1974. In 1977 she graduated with a B.S. in Communication Disorders. She traveled extensively in Brasil and returned to the University of Texas in 1978 to enter the Graduate School of Communications. She completed her graduate training in 1980. Ms. Garcia entered private practice as a Pediatric Audiologist.

In 1990, Ms. Garcia started her current career in migrant health with an invitation to increase public awareness around the plight of migrant and seasonal farmworkers through the promotion of the photographic exhibit America's Migrant Farmworkers by Alan Pogue. With this introduction Ms. Garcia learned about the enormous health disparities experienced by migrants and their families. M. Garcia continues to write and present on the health needs of migrants and the disparities in the provision of health care services they suffer. She has developed clinician training on infectious and chronic diseases and programs to assist migrant to remain in clinical care as they move for purposes of employment.

Ms. Garcia is a long–time resident of Austin, TX where she lives with her son Sebastián Garcia Pogue.
