Enedelia Basurto (she/her) is a Health Network Associate. She is also Medical Assistant who enjoys helping her community. Basurto has previously traveled between states as a migrant worker. In her free time, she spends time with family and loves going to the movies.

Alejandra Lemus (she/her) was born in El Paso, Texas, and was raised in Juarez in Chihuahua, Mexico. Her family lived a transnational life between El Paso and Juarez until she was seven years old, and her family permanently settled in El Paso. She now lives in Albuquerque, NM where she is working on her PhD at the University of New Mexico's Sociology Department. Her research interests are centered on immigration, political economy, medical sociology, and health inequalities. Specifically, her master's thesis examines the differences in access to health information needed, satisfaction of care, and utilization of care between those whose primary language is English and those whose primary language is not English. Her previous experience working at MCN and personal experiences sparked her academic interests to serve to protect and improve the health of migrants, those who are not fluent English speakers and other underserved, vulnerable populations. In her free time, she likes to cook, practice yoga, go hiking, and listen to music.

Nahiely “Pinky”

Nahiely “Pinky” Garcia graduated from the University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley with a Bachelor’s of Science in Criminal Justice and a minor in Mexican-American Studies. She served as her Graduation’s Class “Bell Ringer” in 2017, an honor given to graduating students who have been actively involved in student-life initiatives, have demonstrated academic excellence, and embody the honor code. Garcia, known as Pinky by her community and friends, has always been involved in extracurricular activities in and out of school because she enjoys helping. Garcia is a Dreamer, and a victim and immigrant advocate, who seeks daily growth on knowledge and spirituality. In 2016, she was bestowed the Sargent Shriver Youth Warriors Against Poverty Award and received a nomination for the “RGV Citizen of the Year Award” in 2017 for her volunteer and community activism and service. Garcia is the founder of the community-based organization, Strides For Fany / Ascensos Por Fany, which she launched in 2014 in honor of her sister and baby nephew whom she lost due to a homicide. She aspires to do more for her community and is excited to be part of MCN as a Health Network Associate.

Joshi Covarrubias's picture

Joshi Marth Covarrubias moved from Santa Rita in Jalisco, Mexico to Grand Rapids, Michigan, with his mother and younger sibling as a child. His experiences as a community advocate for the local Spanish-speaking community, including assistance in finding health services and gaining legal status, spurred his interest in working for MCN. He graduated from Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Michigan with a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. He is the first person in his family to attend and graduate from college. He is also an Army veteran. Covarrubias recently moved to Austin with a goal of attending graduate school at Texas State University. In his free time, he enjoys playing soccer, boxing, and making art.

Norma Gonzalez, LMT is a Health Network Associate. Born in Sonora, Mexico, Gonzalez migrated to the US in 2001 with her family to San Luis, Arizona. Her father had worked in the fields most of his life. As a migrant farmworker in the US, he spent November through March in Arizona, and the rest of the year working in fields of California. Gonzalez graduated from Arizona Western College in 2013 with an Associate's degree in Applied Science as a massage therapist. She worked as a licensed massage therapist from 2011 to 2014. She then worked as a physical therapy technician for four years. In 2018, after getting married, she decided to move to Austin, Texas with her family. Her hobbies include painting and shopping.

Norma González

Robert Corona's picture

Robert Corona graduated from University of Texas, Austin in 2010 with a degree in Linguistics and came to MCN in 2016 after having traveled the world and gaining invaluable insight into the plights of underserved populations in several other countries. He works with Health Network to ensure that patients have a continuity of health services wherever they go. Corona speaks Spanish, French, and Portuguese, and is currently learning Nahuatl. He uses his linguistic background to contact patients all over the world, and specializes in managing cases as far away as the Philippines. In his free time, he works as a freelance photographer and is involved with the Latino/Indigenous community in various ways.

Nestor Reyes is originally from Dallas, TX. He attended Bethel College in North Newton, KS on a soccer scholarship, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. After a short career in banking and finance in Kansas, he moved to Austin, TX in early 2018, after which he began his work with MCN. When he’s not working, Reyes enjoys playing soccer, exercising, listening to and discovering new music, exploring Austin, and spending time with friends.

Luis Retta's picture

Luis Retta, Health Network Associate, first joined MCN as an intern while attending University of Texas, Austin. Retta comes from a small neighborhood in central Dallas known as Oak Cliff where he was born and raised. Despite his youth, Retta has a wealth of professional experience including at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, and as a student advisor on the Dallas Independent School District Board. Retta is the first in his family to attend college; to promote others to do the same, he has served as a youth mentor in his neighborhood, promoting college readiness and the pursuit of higher education. Retta is the son of immigrant parents from Mexico and his life view has been shaped by the understanding that his father’s sacrifice to leave his family behind was and still is to provide better opportunities for his own family. With this in mind, Retta’s goal was to help provide for his family and make higher education his main priority. Retta, who recently completed a degree in Human Development and Family Science while finishing prerequisites for medical school, continues to serve his community. He helped start a student organization to help students,especially underrepresented students, who are pursuing health professions better adjust and prepare for their years at the University. It is this same drive and passion to help the community that led Retta to work with Migrant Clinicians Network where he continues to be a strong asset to the team and learn about future works he can apply later in his career.

Rob Corona's picture

Rob Corona was born and raised in El Paso, TX, and he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor's degree in Linguistics. Mr. Corona has spent the last eight years teaching ESL in the US and abroad. He has also worked to fight for construction/farmworker rights. In addition to working at MCN, Mr. Corona is a private language instructor and does freelance translations in French, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese. In his free time, Mr. Corona likes to travel, ride his motorcycle, practice yoga, draw, cook, read, watch movies, and enjoy the outdoors.

Elodie was born in Mexico and grew up in Houston, TX. She moved to Austin five years ago. Elodie graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor's degree in Social Work. During her last semester at UT Austin, she interned at Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid. As a social work intern, Elodie provided safety planning, crisis intervention and court accompaniment to victims and survivors of domestic violence. In addition to working at MCN, Elodie is vice president of the South Austin Rotary Club and volunteers as a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas. In her free time, Elodie likes to run, practice yoga, and enjoy anything outdoors with her daughter.

Homero Segovia's picture

Homero was born in the Texas Panhandle and moved to Austin when he was 4 years old. He grew up in the Austin area and eventually made the controversial decision to not go to UT and instead attended Texas A&M in College Station. There, Homero received a BS in Psychology with a minor in Neuroscience, becoming the first person in his family to graduate from a university in the U.S. (and a Tier 1 university to boot!). Homero was drawn to the opportunity to work for a nonprofit dedicated to a cause very personally near to him. In his free time, he hangs out with his dog, plays soccer, and spends time on the ranch he was raised on.

Olivia Hayes is a student at Texas State University where she is earning her BA in Social Work. In addition to working at Migrant Clinicians Network, she works as a Volunteer Coordinator helping students build confidence through music. Ms. Hayes was born in Columbus, Ohio. During her free time, she enjoys riding her bike, reading, and going to the movies.

Diana Villegas graduated from Texas State University in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in Spanish with a minor in Biology. Diana was part of the College Assistant Migrant Program (CAMP) at Texas State and honored as Exemplary Migrant Student of the Year in 2007. Diana interned with the Bert Corona Leadership Institute for the Experience in Democracy in Washington D.C. She worked with over 450 high school and college students alongside with their parents with migrant background to increase understanding of government and public policy. The participants created an agenda with issues facing their community and got the opportunity to present it in front of their local congressmen and senators. Outside of her work at MCN, Diana enjoys playing volleyball, floating the river and training her new puppy Riley.

Yamina was born in Mexico City, Mexico but lived in California since the age of 5 so she considers herself a Californian at heart. In 2009 she graduated with a B.S. in psychology from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Yamina has been in Austin for 2 years and has no plans of moving back to California. Before joining MCN she worked at a dog daycare and boarding facility. In her spare time she enjoys relaxing, meditating and taking her dog Roxie to the lake!

Jessica Martinez was born in Harlingen, raised in Brownsville and Austin, Tx. She graduated from Southern Careers as a Medical Assitant. She has experience in the medical field which made this position great for her. She loves spending time with friends and family. On her free time she takes zumba, and jazzercise classes.

Janeth was born in Monterrey, NL, Mexico, but have lived in Texas most of her life. Just before joining Health Network, she graduated from the University of Texas with a B.A. in Psychology, and a B.S. in Radio-Television-Film. While in college, she volunteered with the ‘modSquad’ at Austin State Hospital and Austin Integral Care’s ASPIRE program. These programs really helped her to understand the value and impact of social services. When Janeth is not at Health Network, she enjoys reading, watching movies and making short animations.

Born in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico and raised by migrant parents, Damiana spent most of her childhood moving between Mexico and the United States. At the age of 10 Damiana's mother decided to keep her and her brother in Brownsville, Texas and her father, to this day, continues to travel as a migrant worker. After graduating High School, Damiana went off to college at Texas A&M University - Kingsville, not too close or too far from home. After graduating in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminology and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish she spent 2.5 yrs working for the state at The Texas Department of Family & Protective Services in Cameron county and then Travis County, which brought her to Austin. Since then Damiana has worked at a couple of non profit organizations and now MCN since April 2012. She enjoys live music, indie & foreign films, Barton Springs, and going home to Brownsville; to spend time at the beach with her mother.

As a recent graduate from the University of North Texas, Gracie became an addition to the Migrant Clinicians Network in January of 2011. She earned a degree in sociology with a minor in Spanish as a means to practice reciprocity. While in college, she worked as an English tutor at Laredo Community College and as a bilingual interviewer at the UNT Survey Research Center. Gracie relocated to Austin soon after graduating and was welcomed into Health Network.

When Gracie is not fulfilling her role as a Health Network Associate, she experiences beauty in reading, creating, and volunteering.

Jose holds a degree is sociology from the University of Houston. While pursuing his degree he worked with an Urban Community Farm to bring organic produce to inner city Houston residents. He also worked with The Real School, an alternative education education project in Houston, TX that encourages self directed learning and empowerment of youth.
