Five on Friday | April 24, 2015

It’s Friday! Let’s celebrate the weekend with the top five items from MCN staff, on the many happenings in migrant health and beyond.

Ricardo, Health Network Manager, sent us another awesome map find: “Check out the global health trends under ‘Nutrition and Basic Medical Needs’ and ‘Health and Wellness.’”

Tiffy, Graphic Designer, recommends a chilling article in this week’s New Yorker on kidnappings at the border. It’s a highly engaging read, which stretches into many of the complexities of the issue, from border security, poor treatment in the hieleras of the US Customs and Border Control, and the economics of border protection, to gang violence in Guatemala, to last year’s influx of unaccompanied children arriving at the border.

MCN BODThe deadliest border crossing isn’t the US/Mexico border -- it’s the Mediterranean. Claire, Writer and Editor, offered an Al Jazeera article on border crossings and EU immigration policy responses on the heels of the drowning of over 800 immigrants this week. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) warns that, if current high rates of crossings continue, “the migrant death toll could top 30,000” this year.

Theressa,Training and Technical Assistance Coordinator, passed along the newest reports from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Ending on a happy note: Claire, Writer and Editor, wonders if you missed out on this week’s announcement on MCN’s three new board members.
