Dr. Barrak Alahmad is a leading global expert on migrant workers health and the occupational and environmental exposures that shape disease risk, including extreme heat, air pollution, and dust storms. He has conducted extensive research on environmental exposures among migrant workers in the Middle East, producing evidence that has informed public health discussions, policy debates, and media coverage. His work has been recognized and highlighted by major national and international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations (UN) Habitat, and the American Heart Association (AHA), and featured in leading media outlets such as the BBC, CNN, The New York Times, The Guardian, and others.
He is the recipient of several national and international honors, including awards from the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE), the Boston Congress of Public Health, and the 2025 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Board-Council Award for excellence in public engagement on extreme weather and migrant workers’ health in Kuwait.
Dr. Alahmad is a Senior Research Scientist and a director of occupational health in the Department of Environmental Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He received his medical degree from the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom, an MPH from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and a PhD in Population Health Sciences from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
