Rosetta Stone is a software company which markets a variety of language learning software.This company also has an Endangered Languages Division, which creates software to preserve less prevalent languages. The company currently does not have any software available in theIndigenous Languages of Latin America but is possibly interested in developing software with ECMHSP and its parents who speak indigenous languages.Contact Marion Bittinger:mbittinger@RosettaStone.com

This faith-based organization works to document and study lesser-known languages.  It has developed a number of materials, ranging from dictionaries to literature sources, in a wide variety of languages. 

The Native Literacy Center in Oaxaca, Mexico was founded by a group of professionals and native educators from Oaxaca to support literacy projects for indigenous peoples.  This center is involved with preservation, helping indigenous peoples to write their languages, print and publish individual works, write their histories, and record their knowledge for future generations.  People come from Central and South America to this Center, where they learn how to produce their own works.  The center also works with education, teaching indigenous peoples how to write their languages so that they are able to produce their own works. 

This digital archive features a number of recordings and texts in the indigenous languages of Latin America. Materials are available in Mixteco, Mam, Nahuatl, Otomi, Triqui, Zapoteco, and many other indigenous languages. These materials give information about the cultures of these indigenous groups. Original works of literature in indigenous languages are also published on this site. AILLA works to preserve written forms of these languages, but it also collects grammars, dictionaries, ethnographies, and research notes that can be used as teaching materials. Most of the archive is free and available to the public.

This website, owned by SIL International, provides detailed background information about less common languages.  Many of the indigenous languages have profiles.

Western NC Workers Center:  Located in Morganton, North Carolina, the Western NC Workers Center is a non-profit group of community organizers.  This organization currently has a number of outreach and education projects which work to uphold the rights of immigrant and low wage employees in Western North Carolina.  They also work with high levels of Guatemalan immigrants who speak indigenous languages.  One of their projects designed to reach indigenous language speakers is their Promotora Education project, which uses scenario picture books without words to educate low literacy populations about health and work safety.

Mayan Ministries:  Organized through the Diocese of Palm Beach in Florida, Maya Ministries works to address the needs of Mayan immigrants to the area.  These Mayan workers speak up to 25 different dialects of Mayan indigenous languages, but most can speak Spanish as well.  The organization’s main services are literacy programs for families, adult education programs, and early childhood education programs for children who have English as a second language.  They also offer a variety of social services referrals and translating specifically for Mayan immigrants.  They have a Literacy Program funded by the Department of Education that was written in the Mayan indigenous language Canjobal.

Just as adults spend most of their days at work, children spend many of their waking hours at school. So it’s not surprising that, along with their homes and communities, schools are where kids learn good habits, like being physically active every day, or potentially bad habits, like not making healthy decisions at lunch. Therefore, as we seek to help nurture the healthiest nation in one generation, schools are a central part of the strategy.

The recommendations provided in this report include specific action steps and new activities that will require additional funding and a renewed commitment by government and nongovernment organizations involved in domestic and international TB control efforts to be implemented effectively. The Federal TB Task Force will coordinate activities of various federal agencies and partner with state and local health departments, nonprofit and TB advocacy organizations in implementing this plan to control and prevent XDR TB in the United States and to contribute to global efforts in the fight against this emerging public health crisis.

Oral health is one of HRSA's Special Projects of National Significance (SPNS). The SPNS Innovations in Oral Health Care Initiative funds 15 demonstration sites for up to five years to support organizations using innovative models of care to provide oral health care to HIV-positive, underserved populations in both urban and non-urban settings.

Medicaid is a significant source of financing for oral health services, particularly for children and adolescents. Almost universally, however, Medicaid programs identify access to dental care as a significant and persistent problem for persons with Medicaid.  Oral health status and access to dental services are issues for all populations served by Medicaid.  This document from HRSA discusses some of the most critical issues in improving oral health access through Medicaid.  

The National Network for Oral Health Access (NNOHA) is a nationwide network of dental providers who care for patients in Migrant, Homeless, and Community Health Centers. These providers understand that oral disease can affect a person's speech, appearance, health, and quality of life and that inadequate access to oral health services is a significant problem for low-income individuals.

As dental capacity grows, the need for dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants committed to caring for underserved patients is growing as well. NNOHA coordinates a job bank to help connect Health Center dental openings with candidates looking for a career in service to underserved patients.

Founded by singer/songwriter Paul Simon and pediatrician/child advocate Irwin Redlener, MD in 1987, The Children's Health Fund (CHF) works nationally to develop health care programs for the nation's most medically underserved population - homeless and disadvantaged children. CHF brings medical care and essential services directly to underserved children in rural and urban communities via Mobile Medical clinics (doctor's offices on wheels) and fixed site clinics. Moreover, CHF has become a major national advocacy voice on behalf of all children, and has inspired special federal legislation designed to help create innovative Children's Health Projects throughout the United States. The Children's Health Fund's website contains a lot of useful information, which would undoubtedly benefit your audience.

Physician outreach efforts regarding West Nile Virus diagnosis. We have created a webinar that medical professionals can access for free. CME credits are part of the activity, which makes it even better. The webinar features Lyle Petersen, head of CDC’s vector-borne disease unit, along with Anne Kemptrup, from California Dept. of Public Health and Susan Little, executive director of the DEET Education Program. The program runs for one hour.

 Are You Ready? provides a step-by-step approach to disaster preparedness by walking the reader through how to get informed about local emergency plans, how to identify hazards that affect their local area, and how to develop and maintain an emergency communications plan and disaster supplies kit. Other topics covered include evacuation, emergency public shelters, animals in disaster, and information specific to people with disabilities.

Are You Ready? also provides in-depth information on specific hazards including what to do before, during, and after each hazard type.

 

The National Audio Conference on the Hombres Unidos project was a rousing success on the 15th. There were about 100 folks from across the nation, and every sector of society in the discussion.

In May 2005, near its beginning, the HepTalk Project presented a position paper, "Hepatitis Screening, Immunization and Testing for Mobile Populations and Immigrants from Latin America and the Caribbean" It has been updated with new immunization guidelines. This publication clarifies standard hepatitis immunization and testing recommendations for these populations.

HepQuick, also newly updated, incorporates specifics for mobile clients and recent immigrants from the position paper.
