Five on Friday: Special Podcast Edition 2023

Five on Friday: Special Podcast Edition 2023

Many of our Five on Friday recommendations are visual: peer-reviewed journal articles, news pieces, the occasional video. Sometimes, though, we would like to learn more while chopping vegetables or driving to pick up the kids. For those days, here are five podcasts, recommended by MCN staff.  And stay tuned! MCN will be hosting a new 10-episode series in the coming months that we hope you’ll add to your playlist!

La Brega

La Brega was enthusiastically recommended with many exclamation points by Myrellis, Amy, and Esther – the clear winner among the MCN staff. “It’s about the impact and importance of music in Puerto Rico. How music ties into the historical and current struggle of the island and its people,” Esther noted. She specifically recommends Season 2, Episode 1.

Srsly wrong podcast

Not a ‘Nation of Immigrants’ with Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz is an episode of the podcast Srsly Wrong. Robert says, “This one is good but pretty out there.” The featured guest “rejects the narrative of the US being a nation of immigrants because she believes that narrative serves only to dismiss the idea that the US is a settler colonial state and sanitizes the violent history of this nation.”
